How to Open a Gold IRA — Beginner Steps
Opening a gold IRA means building three pieces that work together: a self-directed IRA account, a funding source, and IRS-eligible metals stored in an approved vault. You are not “buying gold on your brokerage app.” You are assembling a compliant retirement structure.
What you are actually opening
A gold IRA is still an IRA. The difference is the assets: physical gold, silver, and sometimes platinum or palladium that meet purity rules. A specialized custodian titles the account. A depository holds the metal.
- Big-box IRAs at Fidelity, Vanguard, or Schwab generally stop at paper assets.
- A self-directed IRA (SDIRA) is the usual door for physical metals.
- Dealers (gold IRA companies) often introduce the custodian and walk you through forms.
Step 1 — Learn the vocabulary
Know custodian, depository, premium, and prohibited transaction before any call. Our homepage primer glossary is a good start.
Step 2 — Shortlist teachers, not slogans
Compare minimums, written fees, education quality, and pressure. Use the company table and read reviews.
- Setup and annual admin fees
- Storage type and insurance
- Minimum vs fee drag on your balance
- Buyback / exit process
Step 3 — Open the self-directed IRA
Complete identity and beneficiary forms with the metals-capable custodian. Choose Traditional, Roth, or SEP based on tax timing — not based on which coin looks shiny.
Step 4 — Fund without the 60-day trap
- Contribution: new annual money under IRS IRA limits (check Publication 590-A each year).
- Transfer: IRA-to-IRA, institution-to-institution.
- Direct rollover: preferred from 401(k)/TSP/403(b) when eligible — funds move trustee-to-trustee.
- Indirect rollover: check payable to you; 60-day redeposit rules and possible 20% withholding on employer plans.
Step 5 — Buy only eligible metal
Gold bars typically 0.995+; silver 0.999+; platinum/palladium 0.9995+. American Eagles are a common statutory exception. Skip jewelry and most collectibles inside the IRA.
Step 6 — Confirm vault storage
Metal ships to an IRS-approved depository under the custodian’s process. Home storage of IRA bullion is not the beginner “hack” some ads imply — it is a compliance risk.
How long and what it costs
Many first accounts finish paperwork in 1–3 weeks. Costs include setup, annual admin, storage, and dealer premiums over spot. Demand an all-in written example before you fund.
